Domestic Violence
Domestic Violence is a serious crime that harms many families and communities every year. Our Victim Assistance Unit is ready to assist all victims of domestic violence to ensure they have access to a variety of social service agencies with the resources they need to help break the cycle of domestic violence. These services include such things as shelter care, temporary housing, legal assistance, child care, counseling, and assistance in obtaining protection from abuse orders.
The Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office aggressively prosecutes domestic violence with the understanding that effective intervention by the criminal justice system is necessary to provide victims an opportunity to free themselves from the abuse. We recognize that the successful prosecution of domestic violence requires a strong commitment to take the initiative to protect the victim from retaliation by the offender, to ease the victim’s fears of the criminal justice system, and to encourage the victim’s cooperation with our prosecution.
